The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn. ~John Lubbock
Sparking young imaginations; learning through creative play. En francais, aussi!
Mission Statement
We love our kids and respect their right to play, explore, daydream, laugh, learn, discover and do their thing, in their own way, while we guide, inspire, encourage, protect and watch in amazement.
About us
We are a different kind of daycare. For 3 years we’ve been taking shape, moving toward a special kind of care. We are respectful of our kids, and allow them to direct the structure of the day. Yet, we find with this harmonious approach, kids are more easily guided, and power struggles and stand-offs are almost non-existent.
Oh, but we’re not letting everyone run wild! We inspire, rather than demand. We invite rather than insist. We let them learn and discover the way they naturally do so well. We love them and keep them safe, and allow them to be themselves.
Our days are full of fun programming, specially chosen to develop the little bodies and minds. Every game, song and activity is chosen for different kinds of development: fine motor skills, creative thinking, sparking the imagination, problem solving, language and more. Our programming has an emphasis on learning through creative play, so art, dress up, pretend, drama, and dance are a big part of everyday.
Our atmosphere is lively and full of love. Our kids, care-givers, and parents are all pieces of the puzzle of this community we’re building. Hiring is an important process for us. Our first (still with us) caregiver has spoiled us! She is beyond gifted in the way she guides the children with gentle control. Because of the way she is with them- loving, respectful, polite, cheerful and inspiring- they want to please her and do as she asks. She has set the tone for the care we will always want at the center.
We’ve drawn inspiration from many schools of thought: Waldorf, Montessori, Attachment Parenting and Connection Parenting, but we’ve found our own unique philosophy has taken shape. There’s a diversity, just like our neighborhood. We’re very Dufferin Grove Park, and if you like the sound of that, you’re probably a great fit for our wonderful daycare.
Our lovely, lively daycare is expanding and we have spaces for 18 months - 5 years. Full or part-time. We’re looking forward to hearing from you! Call Pam at 416 792 1392 to arrange for a visit.
This website has been put together by Laura, Dexter's mom, so that is the voice you hear in the first person writing. Our family has been involved at Rowanwood since Dexter a baby. We've fallen in love with the place so much that I've joined Annie, the owner and founder, in helping to spread the word and bring this level of care to more families.
As an entrepreneur, my experience running my 2 stores, Fresh Baked Goods and Fresh Collective, (where I'm also known by my public persona Laura-Jean the Knitting Queen!) make it an natural fit to help with the promotion and business end of this daycare, and as a parent involved for so many years, I can wholeheartedly endorse the Rowanwood experience!
